Production Characteristics

The main breeds of cattle in Argentina -Aberdeen Angus, Hereford and shorthorn- are of British origin.

The crossing with contintental european breeds, which were imported in the 1960´s, improved the ratio of muscle to fat, adapting the original breeds to the production and comercial requirements.

The production of argentine beef is carried out under extensive systems where the cattle live in open fields, grazing on natural pastures of high quality. This method, based on the freedom in movement in open fields without the unavoidable crowding of feed lot methods, gives argentine beed a quality that is a lower in fat and cholesterol content.
Cattle Breeding
Another important feature is its lipid content, as it has been proveed that in grass-feed cattle the intramuscular fat is signigicantly lower than in those fattened on grains.
Production is based on two systems: breeding and fattening. These are broken down into 3 zones for the former and 1 for the latter.

The zone most recognized internationally is the one in the centre of the country: the Pampas Plains. In this region of fine pastures and temperate climate, the cattle complete their cycle on grass with weight increases of up to 1 kilogram per day. However, the high agricultural production in Argentina also enables it to supply grain-fattened cattle to those markets that demand it.
